A technique I like to show people in my classes and seminars. It is basically how to take a trace file and create an Excel Graph.
You can use this with any other text files, heck a guy in one of my classes used it for his hockey pool. I kid you not. Lol
The other option would be to statically configure an ip address on each device and risk typos and duplicate addresses. Then there is issue of trying to assign static ip addresses to smartphones, tablets and IOT devices.
It is sometimes said that we don’t choose technology, it chooses us. It is certainly possible to live in today’s world without a cell phone, a computer, or a car but it would require individuality and resolve. Whether you are an early adopter, a late-comer, or a total Luddite, sooner or later technology will hunt you down.
In many cases, I do not have access to their network management system, or the network is down or worse, the documentation is dated and inaccurate. I think every network analyst should know how to do basic tasks like this one.
Learning how to use the time column goes a long way when troubleshooting network issues. It is very important for analysts to learn how to configure it to represent time in different ways, start and stop time references, and to add specific TCP timers.
