The Key to Next-Gen Cyber Security is: Complete Threat Visibility!

The Key to Next-Gen Cyber Security is: Complete Threat Visibility

Despite many advances in smart firewall and endpoint cyber security protection, security breaches continue to plague the IT landscape. In 2019, over 100 major breaches have occurred, according to Identity Force, according to Risk Based Security and as reported by TechRepublic, they further state that, “more than 3,800 data breaches have hit organizations, representing an increase of 54% in 2019" - so far.

How to Use Traceroute and Tracert to Troubleshoot Network Connectivity Issues (George Bouchard )

Traceroute/Tracert – More from "Know your Network" series

What is ‘Tracert’?  (Trace Route or Traceroute)

If you are trying to send or receive information to a particular host on the internet, and it is not connecting, it is possible that one of the servers or computers that is in the route to that host is having a problem. Tracert is a great way to find out where in the routing to the host, the problem is occurring by identifying the problem server or computer.

State-Sponsored Cyber Threats: How Nation-State Hackers Target Organizations

State-sponsored entities targeting Airline Industry (Part 1)

 Executive Summary

Airlines and the airport industry in general are highly lucrative targets for APT groups; they are rife with information that other countries would find useful.

NETSCOUT data from 2019 shows airport and airline targeting remains strong and steady, with Russian, Chinese, and Iranian APT groups attempting access.

Not only do we see state-sponsored threats targeting the industry, we also see a large amount of DDoS attacks, which we’ll cover in a follow-up blog (Part 2).

Network Troubleshooting: How Poor Communication Leads to Longer Outages

WE HAVE A FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE

The most frustrating thing as a user, is when you try to explain an issue and no one takes it seriously. I see this from the support side and many times that is precisely why I am called in.

At my last engagement there was a client constantly reporting that her VPN and reporting software would randomly disconnect. She was able to easily reproduce the issue to support staff.

This is where things go sideways. The support staff would go back to their computers, at their desk, on their network, test, see no issues and then close the ticket. Since this was affecting the client’s ability to get her job done in a timely manner she was getting increasingly frustrated.

How to Automate FTP File Transfers Using the Windows Command Line - But Why?

Automating Microsoft's FTP
Despite the abundance of modern file transfer applications, the built-in FTP client included with Windows remains a surprisingly useful tool for network administrators, technicians, and power users. Available directly from the Command Prompt, FTP provides a lightweight method for transferring files without requiring additional software installations. When troubleshooting connectivity issues, testing file transfer services, or working on systems with limited software options, the humble FTP command can often get the job done quickly and efficiently.

One of the biggest advantages of using FTP from the Windows Command Prompt is automation. FTP commands can be incorporated into batch files and scheduled tasks, allowing repetitive uploads and downloads to occur without manual intervention. This can be particularly useful for backing up configuration files, collecting log data from network devices, or transferring reports between systems on a regular basis. A simple script can save significant time while ensuring consistency across routine tasks.

Entangled (by Paul W. Smith) A Must-Read Book for IT and Network Professionals

Entangled (by Paul W. Smith)

If you’re a Network Data Professional and you walk into the server room to find this, you know it will not be a good day. It’s as though the word “entangle” (verb – “to twist together or entwine into a confusing mass”) was coined just for this. Another word commonly used for this situation cannot be printed here (hint: rhymes with bluster-duck). There are all sorts of entanglements in our lives, and very few of them are good.

How to Use the Ping Command to Troubleshoot Network Problems Like a Pro ⭐ (George Bouchard )

 What is ‘ICMP PING’ test?

Ping is a computer ‘Network Administration Software’ utility used to test the connectivity of a host on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. It is available for virtually all operating systems that have networking capability, including most embedded network administration software.

If there is connectivity, Ping measures the round-trip time for messages sent from the originating host to a destination computer that are echoed back to the source. The name comes from ‘Active Sonar’ terminology that sends out a pulse of sound and listens for the echo to detect objects under water.
