Damaged Network Cables: Why Layer 1 Shortcuts Cost You Performance and Uptime

 In this installment of his "2 bits" video series, network trainer and consultant Tony Fortunato tackles a recurring frustration he sees in the field: physically damaged network cables still being used in production. He points to common culprits like broken RJ45 connector tabs, torn or split cable cladding, and the classic move of splicing two cables together and wrapping the joint in electrical tape.

Fortunato's core message centers on the importance of Layer 1, the physical cabling layer that underpins all network performance. He argues that allowing damaged or improvised cabling into a network is a needless risk, one that can quietly degrade throughput or trigger outright outages down the line. For him, the logic is straightforward: if the foundation is compromised, everything built on top of it suffers. He does acknowledge that real-world troubleshooting sometimes forces quick fixes. Grabbing a marginal cable to get a link up and running during an emergency is understandable. His caution is about what happens next: too often that "temporary" fix becomes permanent because nobody circles back to replace it properly, leaving a weak link buried in the network indefinitely.

Finally, he offers practical guidance for anyone tempted to repair a damaged RJ45 connector themselves. If you have a crimper, genuine experience, and a cable tester, go ahead and re-terminate it. But if you're not confident in your skills, he suggests just two real options: toss the cable, or practice on scrap cable with an experienced person checking and testing your work, especially since shielded and gel-filled outdoor cabling add extra complexity that trips up less experienced installers.
