Wireless Roaming Analysis – Not A Walk In The Park (by Jay Botelho)
Wireless networking is no longer a technology, it’s a platform. From mobile data access to VoFi (voice over WiFi), the wireless network is being required to provide multiple services, with unique and often divergent demands. The one common denominator in these services is mobility. Access points are stationary - users are not. Users roam from one AP to another, with the expectation that services will continue seamlessly. But what happens when they don’t?
Wireless roaming analysis is a tricky task. If the wireless deployment is well designed, users are roaming not only from one AP to another but from one channel to another, with absolutely no indication given to the user. This can even happen when the user is stationary – a busy AP knocks the user off so the wireless client associates with another AP on another channel. The only clue the user receives is when sensitive applications, like VPN access or Microsoft Outlook, suddenly disconnect from the network. The user calls the helpdesk, and you must take that “walk in the park” to try to figure out what went wrong.

Troubleshooting SAP User Satisfaction Problems (by Matthias Lichtenegger)
If you’re a network engineer in an organization that runs SAP, you’re probably familiar with the challenge of troubleshooting SAP networking problems. A typical scenario goes like this. End users of a SAP application complain about poor application performance. The SAP BASIS Administrator and Database Administrator report that the SAP applications themselves are performing correctly. They suggest that the real problem lies with the network. They ask you to troubleshoot the problem.
But is the network really the problem? How can you tell? Without in-depth SAP expertise and tools, how can you accurately diagnose a SAP application performance problem? This problem isn’t confined to SAP applications. Whether the application is SAP, Oracle, VoIP, or some other type of application, it’s often difficult to determine whether the application or the network is ultimately responsible for poor quality of service. Even seemingly straightforward metrics such as server response times can be deceptive. In the context of user tasks and application transactions, a slow server may not turn out to be the critical factor affecting a user’s experience.

OVERVIEW
Something wrong is happening on your network. Call it human nature or simply a few bad apples, but unless your organization is miraculously different from all others, someone is leaking information, someone else is dabbling in porn, and someone else is probably doing a handsome business on eBay—on one of your servers.
Your organization has policies about this—and your industry may have regulations that pertain, as well. You need to ensure these policies are complied with—or you need to collect evidence to take action when they’re not.
When you suspect something is wrong, do you have the means to conduct an investigation? How do you collect evidence—digital evidence—when there are so many channels of communication (email, Web mail, IM, etc.), and so many places to look on your network?
Time for network forensics.
