While delivering some customized onsite training, a customer asked if we could investigate an interesting scenario.
These folks are sharp and have intentionally disabled DNS, WINS, NetBIOS and LDAP name resolution, but yet can still connect to another computer by name. They asked if I had seen this before, to which I replied, “sure, but every time the answer was different”. I suggested we set up to computers in the classroom and we replicated the scenario in no time.
I give these guys credit for trying to understand the underpinnings of such an important concept. Name resolution is one of thing that you take for granted because it just auto-magically works.
In this video I take you through the testing methodology along with our findings and finally how to fix it.
