+MAKE will be issuing its Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing on November 20 and their editors will host their MAKE live hangout on Google Plus this coming Monday, November 5 at 2:00 pm PST. At the same time, a bunch of MIT students decided that they could build a 3D printer for less than $3K that competes with high-end machines costing ten times as much. They put their business idea on kickstarter.com thinking that they would raise $100K from pre-paid customers. Instead, they closed nearly $3 million and money is still coming in. So 3D Printing is no longer a if but a when. On the other hand, I wonder if it is still true that during any gold rush, the smart money is in selling denims and shovels. May be this time we need to get our hands dirty.
