REQUIREMENTS
Since the implementation of the Graham-Leach-Bliley Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and the California SB 1386 privacy act, protection of corporate and consumer privacy has never been more squarely in the public spotlight. To comply with these federal and state mandates, businesses must protect the security, confidentiality, and integrity of any personal information they maintain. That means they must develop and enforce stringent privacy policies and educate their employees on the importance of adhering to those policies.
If privacy violations occur, business leaders must take responsibility by notifying consumers of the privacy breach. Companies may face fines and even criminal prosecution. In addition, the negative publicity impact of non-compliance can do irreparable harm to a corporate brand.
Privacy policy enforcement is one of the key responsibilities of Chuck Shmayel, vice president of infrastructure and security at SIRVA, Inc. “A large part of my job is ensuring that our corporate policies are effective. I am always on the lookout to see if personal information, private data, or intellectual property is leaving our network. We have a policy to block Webmail and instant messaging (IM), so my primary focus is email, both flowing out of and coming into the corporate network.”
THE SOLUTION
Because of the vast amount of traffic on the SIRVA network, Shmayel needed an effective way to monitor privacy data so that he and his technical team could quickly spot issues and alert on potential policy violations. After evaluating two other products on the market, Shmayel chose the iGuard appliance from Reconnex, an easy-to deploy, easy-to-use, enterprise-class solution that protects information before, during, and after any threat to corporate privacy or intellectual property.
Reconnex iGuard captures critical information at rest, monitors for data in motion, and prevents breaches through blocking and alerts. It additionally captures data for after-the-fact investigation and search with easy-to-use policies, reporting, and management tools.
“Reconnex monitored and captured both inbound and outbound traffic. Its reporting system was much more detailed,” states Shmayel. “It also is the only content monitoring product that lets us capture, classify, and store all content, so that we can look back over all the data to see what is passing through our filters and firewalls. I need a history: who had the data, who are the recipients, was the data forwarded, where it went, who handled the information leaving our network or coming into the network, and what, if any, information has been changed.”
The Reconnex iGuard appliance is the first content monitoring appliance to allow organizations to monitor all network traffic from a content perspective, looking for both known and unknown threats entering and leaving their networks. Moreover, the Reconnex iGuard appliance is the only content-monitoring solution that supports “after-the-fact” risk discovery.
The Reconnex iGuard appliance captures and stores all the content traversing the network. This allows organizations to perform historical analysis on the captured data to detect unknown threats and to correlate with known (detected) threats. A rolling 30- to 90-day window for data retention allows security teams to build context around incidents by searching for all surrounding network traffic, including information that may or may not have triggered an event.
Users can rapidly access, query, and search the stored content using predefined or custom rule sets. These rule sets can map to corporate governance policies, network security policies, or regulatory requirements such as SOX, GLBA, or SB 1386. Users can also conduct ad-hoc searches to understand the “who, what, when, and where” of aberrant transmissions and quickly pinpoint the root causes of security breaches.
Shmayel and his team also use the Reconnex iGuard appliance to monitor the effectiveness of other security systems on the network. iGuard monitors SIRVA’s Websense Web filtering tool, designed to limit access to appropriate Websites, and its MessageLabs email spam and content-filtering system, which protects the network from malware threats. “Every once in a while, something sneaks through,” says Shmayel. “We can go to the Reconnex product first to get the information we need to investigate the problem and reconfigure our filters accordingly. This is saving us a tremendous amount of time and money.”
BENEFITS
The ability to monitor all data—incoming and outgoing— enables SIRVA to protect its intellectual property and ensure regulatory compliance. Reconnex iGuard also allows SIRVA to effectively enforce policies and deliver comprehensive IT security. And, by protecting information always, SIRVA safeguards its brand and its public reputation.
How well does the Reconnex problem address SIRVA’s privacy and compliance requirements? “On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give Reconnex a 9 or 10,” exclaims Shmayel. “With Reconnex, I know what is traveling on my network. I trust what I have in place is doing its job.”
