Come one, Come all !
Mark Your Calendar today and come swim with the Big Fish of Open Source !
Gerald Combs, the original creator of Ethereal, now dubbed WireShark, and CACE Technologies will host the first SHARKFEST Developers and Users Conference March 31st through April 2nd at Foothill College located in Los Altos Hills, California.
CACE Technologies and Wireshark University are the primary sponsors of this inaugural gathering of the vast global community that comprises the open source network analyzer’s user and proponent base.
SHARKFEST '08 will be a landmark event for the Wireshark community, a celebration of an exemplary open source experiment, and a chance for the developers that have helped make Wireshark a worldwide success to meet for the first time since the project began almost ten years ago.
The project’s most recent kudo came from InfoWorld, which bestowed a BOSSIE (Best of Open Source) award on Wireshark in September, 2007. BOSSIE is an innovative recognition program focused on the best of open source software created by the IDG Group.
InfoWorld editors said this of WireShark – “Here's something that almost goes without saying: Wireshark, nee Ethereal, takes the BOSSIE for network protocol analysis. Wireshark lacks many features found on pricey commercial network analysis tools, but what it does do, it does extremely well. An exceptionally powerful analyzer, Wireshark provides a wide range of default decoders and parses out traffic threads with ease. It's so good, in fact, that many of those pricey commercial tools use it as their packet parsing engine. If it’s on the wire, Wireshark will help you make sense of it, and present the data in a clear, concise manner. Don’t expect any fancy automatic problem diagnosis or troubleshooting – that’s up to you.”
The main focus points for SHARKFEST '08 are:
- To provide an informational, educational, and social venue for core Wireshark developers as well as the widespread and diverse user community.
- To expose enterprise users to the benefits of deploying Wireshark and CACE Technologies’ enhancement products (AirPcap, WinPcap, e.g.) corporate-wide.
- To demonstrate the power and utility of Wireshark and complimentary tools through a series of trainings and workshops.
SHARKFEST '08 will be comprised of three days of tutorials and labs broken into Developer and General Tracks. In the Developer’s Track, CACE Technologies will showcase various products and tools that enhance the Wireshark user experience while the General Track will include Wireshark University trainings that will enlighten and inform novice as well as advanced Wireshark users.

Editor's Note - Why is SHARKFEST so special? Because Open Source technology is in the main stream of our everyday life in the networking community and this event is all about supporting and growing this technology and training the users on how Wireshark and complimentary Open Source applications can help us in our everyday struggle to keep networks running and safe. Open Source applications would not be here if it wasn’t for innovators like Gerald and the many contributing developers that help make them real solutions. We should all support the Open Source community.
More SHARKFEST '08 announcements will be coming soon, so be ready and register early to save some money and make sure you have a seat at this innovative community project gathering.
